Places we know well.

After a decade in Virginia and the Carolinas we've photographed at most of the estates, barns and chapels between the mountains and the coast. Here are a few we return to gladly, with notes on the light.

Pippin Hill

Best light on the west terrace from six o'clock. Ask for the ceremony to face the vineyard.

The Clifton

The library for a rainy-day ceremony; the lawn for portraits. We know where the gate key is kept.

Fearrington Village

Cows, boxwoods and an excellent cake. The barn is dark and lovely; we bring one small light.
