Investment guide

How to think about hours, albums and the second photographer.

Most couples have never hired a wedding photographer before, and the choices can feel arbitrary. They're not. This page explains what each decision changes, so you can spend where it matters to you and nowhere else.

Hours

How much of the day do you want to keep?

Eight hours covers a ceremony, portraits, dinner and the first dances. Ten adds getting ready and a real stretch of the dancing. Twelve is for weddings with a long gap, a distant venue, or a send-off you'd hate to miss.

If you're unsure, book ten. Adding an hour on the day is always possible; wishing you had is not.

The second photographer

Two rooms, two sides of the aisle, two sets of eyes.

A second photographer means I can be with one of you while they're with the other, and that the ceremony is covered from both directions. For anything over eighty guests I consider it essential rather than optional, which is why it's built into the full-day collections.

The album

Linen or leather, thick matte pages, designed by me and approved by you. The thing your children will find on the bottom shelf.

Parent albums

Smaller copies of the main album. Parents claim not to need them and then keep them within reach for the rest of their lives.

Prints

Archival prints from the gallery, at cost plus a little. Frame the one you love; don't let it live only on a phone.

Questions couples ask

Do we need an engagement session?

Need, no. But an hour together before the wedding means you'll know how I work and I'll know how the two of you are together. It's included in the full-day collections and it changes the wedding portraits noticeably.

What happens if it rains?

We make rain photographs. I bring clear umbrellas, we find good cover, and the light under cloud is kinder than any sunny afternoon. Some of my favourite weddings were wet.

How do payments work?

A third to hold the date, a third six months out, the rest two weeks before. If you'd prefer monthly instalments, ask; I'm flexible about the schedule, just not about the date.

Can we have the unedited files?

No, and I say that kindly. The edit is half the work. You'll receive every photograph worth having, finished the way it should be.

Will you share our wedding online?

Only with your say-so. Some couples love it, some want their day to stay theirs. Both are fine and neither changes the price.

Still have questions? Good. Ask them.
